Dylan Champion is a singer-songwriter, producer and front man for the acclaimed L.A. indie rock band Shapes of Race Cars, who has been hailed BY THE L.A. WEEKLY AS "A SONGWRITING FORCE TRADING IN SOMETHING PROFOUND."
a good chunk of his forthcoming debut solo album The Rebellion was tracked in Nashville, but when the pandemic hit, champion had time in his home studio in east l.a. to “explore the hidden corners of my songwriting.” he says the result is “kind of a pandemic miracle - a beautiful Frankenstein. like everybody, i was kind of set asunder by the dawn of the pandemic, but this record is truer and richer because it happened.” the result is a singular, genre-blending mix of light and dark - an ode to youth, joy and creative power with an a times crestfallen heart. Sunshine-bathed tracks like “On the bubble” "We Got Starlets" and "To Sing Out Loud" swing from dayglow or andy shauf-inspired indie pop to Ennio Morricone trumpet lines with sing-song choruses and Motown beats. raw, spare tracks like “the rebellion,””Don’t Wake” and "Real Love" blend CONFESSIONAL darkness with a cinematic beauty, conjuring shades of Nick Drake, sufjan stevens and Simon & Garfunkel.
champion’s music has been featured on dozens of television shows, films and national AD campaigns, and he’s written and produced with artists from all over the world.
his time in quarantine turned out to be a very productive - in addition to the rebellion, champion also wrote and produced two new albums for indie/electro side projects the neon letters and black swan. , which will begin releasing singles this year. “i’ve away used music to deal with the darkness but it’s also my greatest channel for joy.”
